Legislation

Chapter 1 of Part 5 – of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 ( Control of Noise ) places a duty on employers to assess the noise levels where it is thought that noise thresholds may be breached.

Under the regulations, the employer must do the following:
  • Make a suitable and appropriate assessment of the risks
  • Measure the levels of noise to which the employer’s employees are exposed
  • Ensure that any sampling is representative of the daily personal exposure of an employee to noise
  • Ensure that the methods and apparatus used:
  • Conduct noise monitoring
  • Eliminate or reduce noise levels
  • Display mandatory warning signs
  • Provide PPE
  • Provide Information, Training and Consultation, and
  • Conduct health surveillance

Workplace Noise – FAQ18 April 2011 – What are the current Noise Regulations?

Occupational Noise is currently legislated for in the Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007. Noise at Work is dealt with under Part 5, Chapter 1 — Control of Noise at Work.   18 April 2011 – What are the various noise exposure action levels?

There are 2 action levels as well as a maximum exposure level

Upper Exposure Action Level:

  • LEX,8h = 85 dB (A)
  • ppeak = 137 dB (C)

Lower Exposure Action Level:

  • LEX,8h = 80 dB (A)
  • ppeak = 135 dB (C)

Lower Exposure Action Level:

  • LEX,8h = 87 dB (A)
  • ppeak = 140 dB (C)
