Signing, Lighting & Guarding at Roadworks

Legislation

Since 6th July 2009 as per the requirements of the Safety, Health & Welfare at Work (Construction) (Amendment) Regulations (SI 130 of 2008 and SI 423 of 2008), construction workers undertaking tasks relating to the installation, maintenance, modification and removal of Signing, Lighting and Guarding (SLG) at roadworks will be required to be in possession of a valid CSCS card.

The net effect of the regulations, CSCS scheme and Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual include:
  • Proper planning
  • Notification of sites (AF1)
  • Appointment of duty holders (PSCS / PSDP)
  • Safety & Health Plans
  • Safeguarding of members of the public
  • Provision for cyclists and persons with disabilities
  • Requirements for CSCS training
  • Requirements for Signing, Lighting and Guarding of works

Where works take place on the road, footpath or cycle-track, there must at all times be at least one person on site with a CSCS card for SLG when signing, lighting or guarding is being installed, modified or removed.

Business Safety provide SLG audits for local authorities and private contractors throughout Ireland.  The audit format has been adapted to take particular account of the requirements of the Construction Regulations, CSCS scheme and Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual.
